Description
irispy is a library that provides the tools to read in and analyze data from Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). IRIS is a NASA Small Explorer satellite whose 20 cm telescope feeds a high-frame-rate ultraviolet imaging spectrograph, observing the solar chromosphere and transition region (with lighter coverage of the corona) in far-ultraviolet and near-ultraviolet passbands at about 0.33 arcsecond spatial resolution and roughly 1 second cadence. irispy provides classes for handling both IRIS slit-jaw imager (SJI) images and spectrograph (SG) raster observations, linking each observation to its measurement uncertainties, physical units, a mask marking unreliable or unphysical pixels, World Coordinate System transformations describing position, wavelength and time, and the full IRIS metadata. It reads IRIS level 2 SJI and raster FITS files, including gzipped files, _raster.tar.gz archives and the IRIS-aligned SDO/AIA data cubes distributed with each observation by the IRIS team, and can load an entire observation with a single call. Analysis and calibration capabilities include exposure-time correction and radiometric calibration between data number, photons and physical radiance units using the time-dependent IRIS effective-area response, cosmic-ray and dust-artefact removal, spectral moment maps, red-blue asymmetry maps, electron-density diagnostics from line ratios, decoding of IRIS OBS IDs into human-readable observing descriptions, IRIS-specific plotting and animation, and wobble movie generation. The package assumes the IRIS level 2 data products, which are the recommended science product; level 1 data must first be processed with the SolarSoft IDL calibration routines. Note that the package is distributed on PyPI and conda-forge as irispy-lmsal to avoid a name clash, but is imported and referred to as irispy.
