SunPy 8.0.0 is a major release. Breaking changes: the
reference_date property of
AIAMap and
HMIMap now returns a value on the same time scale as
date, to prevent subtle user error; minimum dependency versions were raised across the board (astropy >=7.0.0, numpy >=2.0.0, matplotlib >=3.10.0, scipy >=1.14.0, pandas >=2.3.0, spiceypy >=7.0.0, drms >=0.8.0, reproject >=0.14.0 among others). New features: the Solar Orbiter Archive can be queried through
Fido with no extra install because the
sunpy-soar package has been merged into sunpy; new map sources
PHIMap for the Solar Orbiter Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager and
METISMap for the Metis coronagraph (with a default
mask property and a gallery example);
astropy.table.QTable objects holding
SkyCoords in
sunpy.coordinates frames can be saved to and read back from FITS;
get_horizons_coord can print the JPL Horizons response; and sunpy can be built for free-threaded Python. Fixes include SIP distortion information no longer being ignored when building a Map WCS, thread-safety corrections in the
SphericalScreen,
PlanarScreen,
propagate_with_solar_surface and
transform_with_sun_center context managers, corrected Level 1 detection in
EITMap, corrected SUIT colormap values, a SPICE time-conversion error of up to 1.6 ms, an updated ADAPT filename pattern, and a SOLARNET client switch to the
solarnet.oma.be host.
