Concise Description
Python interface to the World Magnetic Model 2020 (WMM2020) for computing geomagnetic field declination, inclination, and intensity at any location and time.
Description
WMM2020 is a Python wrapper providing a simple, object-oriented interface to the World Magnetic Model 2020 (WMM2020), the standard geomagnetic reference model produced by NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and the British Geological Survey (BGS). Given geographic latitude, longitude, altitude, and decimal year as inputs, the software computes the geomagnetic field elements: magnetic declination, inclination, total field intensity, and the north, east, and downward components of the magnetic field vector. The underlying WMM2020 C source code from NOAA is compiled automatically on first use via CMake. The package supports gridded computations over latitude/longitude arrays (returning xarray Datasets) as well as single-point lookups, and includes visualization of declination and inclination contour maps. WMM2020 is tested on Linux, macOS, and Windows. The model is valid for the epoch 2020.0 to 2025.0.
